iPhone 2.0 - Two Weeks Later
I've been using the iPhone 2.0 software on my 2G iPhone for a couple of weeks now. It's time for a check in on how things are going.
The iPhone 2.0 software is slow - as in molasses running uphill on a January morning. And it's not just me. I'm sure there will be an update that will speed things up a bit, but it really is disappointing that this software made it out the door in the first place. Apple has made a clear error in judgement here. Fail.
I've installed many applications, but very few of them are passing the two week "am I really using it regularly test". Here's the rundown:
Where: Maps were too slow to be usable. Fail.
Truphone: Have yet to successfully place a call. They must be having scalability issues. Epic Fail.
Things: Looks nice but doesn't sync with the desktop version yet. What's the point of releasing it if it doesn't work? Fail for now.
Smugshot: Works OK, but I think my iPhone camera is slightly damaged from dropping the phone, so I am usually not impressed enough with the image quality to be motivated to share the photos I take with it.
NYTimes: Works OK, but crashes way too often for how simple it is. And I REALLY WISH IT WOULD DOWNLOAD THE PAPER IN THE BACKGROUND so I would have something to read when I'm out of range of network connectivity. Fail.
Remote: Never got it working. Unclear value proposition beyond gee whiz. Fail.
VoiceNotes: Short recording time. Still hoping I'll find a reason to use it.
Bloomberg: Had hoped to love it but I don't. The info is ironically always out of date, and updates seem to take forever. Fail.
PhoneSaber: Still my kids favorite application. May be my favorite as well. Brings me joy for unexplainable reasons.
NetNewsWire: By far my most used iPhone 2.0 application. Beautiful and getting better. As with NYTimes, I wish it would synch in the background so I always have a recent download when I'm out of range.
Evernote: Just signed up for this one both on the desktop and on the iPhone. Time will tell.
AOL Radio: Love it. Outstanding. A great companion to Pandora.
Pandora: It's better than the wonderful browser and desktop version. A triumph. Huzzah.
Weatherbug: Very nice. The webcam images are very cool. I wish it had longer range forecasts.
Banner Free: Another app that makes me happy. I wish the scroll speed was adjustable. Excellent for signaling speakers at the podium with "Slow Down" or "Remember to Smile" messages. Also good for sending notes to my kids in church.
Cube Runner: So so game, but it's free.
Chopper: Ditto Cube Runner.
Movies: Does what it says it will do. No complaints.
The app that I really wish I had, but can't get yet due to the intolerable Apple App store approval delay is Scriptures. The online version rocks, except at church, where I have spotty connectivity to the EDGE network.
My overall grade for iPhone 2.0 is "C - More Effort Needed". There is a lot to love about the iPhone, but making it slower with new releases really kills the joy. We're in the early days of the applications market, but so far the signal to noise ratio is pretty low. I'm hopeful that a new crop of better apps and performance-enhanced OS update will be a reality before Labor Day.

Remote can be tough to get working, but works really well if you have an Airport Express hooked up to your stereo. If not, then I don't think you'd need it. (Or an Apple TV - it also works with that.)
I like the Othello games on the phone - nice to get a quick game in when you've got a few minutes.
The other one that I like is Shazam, which will take a snipet of music and tell you what song it is. Handy.

Not sure why you're having so much trouble with Remote...works like a charm on my Ipod touch. Maybe the iPhone is the problem and not the software.
Same here. Setting up Remote was a total breeze, and it works really well. I'm controlling the music in my apartment with it, and it works amazingly well. Way more useful that the small white Apple remote.
A few things about the remote application...
It needs to connect to your Wifi network (obviously). And it can't be connected to VPN at the same time, since then iTunes won't be on the same network.
I had to shut down iTunes and then restart it for it to allow me to enter the information for the remote. Setup wasn't typical Apple easy - I'll agree there.
If you don't have an Airport Express, you should get one. :)
